Interesting Government pushes new features and costs working for the car industry?

The government has required that all new cars be fitted with tire pressure inflation safety devices. This one from Nissan is interesting. However at what cost. I know in some cases it is just software however these monitors can cost about $100 - $300 per wheel. So why is the government forcing this cost on you?

There may be several reasons but I think car manufacturers just want to increase their profit and are pushing the government to mandate these features. Most people on the street would say yes absolutely make it mandatory, but when they realize that a car will cost an additional $1000. Will they be willing to pay.

I think this concept is definitely the future of tire pressure monitoring systems and would pay for this feature. Working with the pressure gauge etc is a pain and worth the extra cost to me.
